Measure Twice, Cut Once

Double-check all measurements before ordering materials. Returns and re-orders cost time and money.

Back to All Tips

The oldest rule in construction exists for good reason: mistakes born from bad measurements are expensive, time-consuming, and entirely avoidable. This principle applies to everything from tile orders to cabinet layouts to door openings.

Why Measurements Go Wrong

Rooms are rarely perfectly square or level. Walls bow, floors slope, and corners aren't always 90 degrees. If you measure assuming everything is plumb and square, you'll order materials that don't fit. Always measure in multiple places — the width of a room at the floor may differ from its width at the ceiling.

Ordering Materials: Add Overage

Always order 10–15% more tile, flooring, or other cut materials than your square footage calculation suggests. This accounts for cuts, breakage, and future repairs. Running out mid-installation and needing to reorder can result in dye lot mismatches that are impossible to match exactly.

The Cabinet Layout Trap

Kitchen cabinets are particularly unforgiving. A layout that looks perfect on paper may not account for the dishwasher clearance, the door swing radius, or the location of a window that can't move. Mock up your layout with masking tape on the floor before ordering anything. Many cabinet companies offer free design consultations — use them.

Door and Window Rough Openings

Rough opening sizes for doors and windows must be precise. Too small and the unit won't fit; too large and you'll spend hours on shimming and trim work. Always verify rough opening dimensions against the manufacturer's installation specs, not general rules of thumb.

When In Doubt, Have a Pro Measure

For countertops, custom windows, and large tile installations, consider hiring a professional to take final measurements before ordering. The cost of a measuring visit is trivial compared to the cost of a mis-ordered countertop slab.
