Use a flashlight and a ruler to gauge the depth of your existing material. You should aim for a value of R-49 to R-60 in most cold climates. If your home was built before the 1980s, there is a high probability that your current insulation has settled or is simply inadequate by modern building standards. Choose the Right Material Different areas of the home require different types of insulation for optimal performance. Fiberglass batts are the most common and are easy to install between open wall studs and attic joists, but they require careful cutting to avoid gaps. For hard-to-reach areas or attics with irregular shapes, loose-fill cellulose is often superior because it can be blown into corners and around obstructions, creating a seamless thermal blanket. If you are dealing with damp areas or foundation walls, rigid foam board is the best choice as it provides high thermal resistance and a moisture barrier simultaneously. Seal Before You Insulate One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is adding insulation without first addressing air leaks. Insulation is designed to stop heat transfer, but it does not stop airflow. If air is leaking through gaps around electrical outlets, plumbing penetrations, or attic hatches, your new insulation will act like a filter rather than a barrier, trapping dust and moisture. Use expanding spray foam for larger gaps and silicone caulk for smaller cracks around windows and doors. An inexpensive trick is to use an incense stick on a windy day; walk around your home and watch where the smoke wavers to identify invisible drafts that need sealing. Taking these steps to stop drafts will increase the effectiveness of your insulation by up to 30 percent. Safety First Practices Insulation work can be hazardous if proper protective gear is ignored. Always wear a long-sleeved shirt, pants, gloves, and protective goggles to prevent skin irritation from fiberglass particles. A N95 respirator mask is non-negotiable when working with blown-in insulation or removing old batts, as airborne particulates can severely irritate your lungs. Furthermore, never cover recessed lighting fixtures unless they are explicitly marked as IC-rated (Insulation Contact). Covering non-rated fixtures can cause them to overheat and create a significant fire hazard.
